City of Glasgow Honors Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Burmese democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was given the Freedom of the City of Glasgow. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is also a Nobel Peace laureate, remains under house arrest.

 
Dr Thaung Htun, representative for UN Affairs of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, accepted the award on her behalf at the ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers.
 
Nelson Mandela is also the recipient of the Freedom of the City of Glasgow award in 1981.
 
Addressing the presentation ceremony, Dr Thaung Htun said the award is a "sharp reminder of the mind-numbing reality of today's Burma" where Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma are denied even basic freedoms in their own country.

Dr Sein Win Says Situation in Burma is Critical

Prime Minister Dr Sein Win, re-elected at the Fourth Congress of the Members of Parliament Union (MPU) in Malahide, Dublin, Ireland, members of his new Cabinet, and the MPU Standing Committee held strategic consultations with leaders of democracy and ethnic organizations from 24 to 26 January.  The Irish Times which covered the event interviewed Dr Sein Win and the following appeared in the Irish Times print edition:

NLD Launches Signature Campaign To Free Political Prisoners

The National League for Democracy has called on the people to become actively involved in activities which will be launched in support for the New Year Statement of the Committee Representing People's Parliament calling for the release of political prisoners.


NLD wants people to get involved in any way they can in the endeavor to free U Tin Oo, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Khun Tun Oo, Min Ko Naing and all other political prisoners, said an NLD spokesperson.
