NLD Launches Signature Campaign To Free Political Prisoners

The National League for Democracy has called on the people to become actively involved in activities which will be launched in support for the New Year Statement of the Committee Representing People's Parliament calling for the release of political prisoners.

NLD wants people to get involved in any way they can in the endeavor to free U Tin Oo, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Khun Tun Oo, Min Ko Naing and all other political prisoners, said an NLD spokesperson.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) released a statement on 29 January urging the people to become actively involved in support of the call by the Committee Representing People's Parliament (CRPP) in its New Year State to gain the release of all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The NLD statement reads:

NLD is convinced that the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will help to achieve national reconciliation. It also profoundly believes that by freeing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, unity can be rebuilt among the people, including the ethnic nationality groups.

Hence, people are urged to support Statement No 1/01/09 issued by the NLD and seven other political parties on 1 January 2009 in order to fulfill the need of the nation and the true wish of the people. The statement called for the immediate and unconditional release of NLD Vice Chairman U Tin Oo and General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who are under house arrest and all other political prisoners, including monks and Khun Tun Oo and Min Ko Naing, who are serving long prison terms.

In an interview, NLD spokesperson Dr Win Naing said the New Year statement was issued on 1 January 2009 by eight political parties -- NLD, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, Arakan League for Democracy, Mon National Democratic Front, National Democratic Party for Human Rights, Party for National Democracy, Zomi National Congress, and the United Nationalities League for Democracy.

People can extend their support to the statement in any way they can. The NLD has already instructed its state and divisional party branches to begin initiating activities. The NLD party branches will be instructing all grassroots party units to collect signatures of the people within their own locales.

There are a total of 2,162 political prisoners in Burmese prisons as of 1 January 2009, according to Thai-based Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
